SARNIA – Another Tartan is set to don Lambton colours.
Guard Ferrah Blackbird has officially committed to Head Coach Janine Day and the Lambton Women’s Basketball Program for the 2024-25 season, and beyond.
Blackbird is the sixth member of the 2024 recruiting class for Day and the rest of her coaching staff. Come September, Blackbird will join the likes of Madison Fink (Blenheim, Ont.), Gianna Therrien (Timmins, Ont.), Lauren Smith (Stoney Creek, Ont.), Bryn Goebel (Perth, Ont.), and Cassandra Newcombe (Chatham, Ont.) as a newcomer in a Lambton uniform.
“We are excited that Ferrah has committed to be a Lion,” said Day. “She brings a toughness and grit that we pride our team on and will add to our guard rotation.”
“Ferrah is an exceptional athlete who has played various sports at the high school level. Her ability to see the court and defend is exactly the type of player that will boost our roster.”
Blackbird, a five-foot-four guard from Walpole Island, comes to Lambton College from Wallaceburg District Secondary School where she played for the Tartans. Blackbird is the latest in a long line of former Tartan student-athletes to join the Women’s Basketball Program at Lambton College, let alone varsity athletics as a whole for the Lions.
One of those former Tartans is her sister, Legacie Blackbird. Legacie was named an OCAA Women’s Basketball Championship All-Star after helping the Lions win their first OCAA Gold Medal in the 2023-24 season, and they turned that into a CCAA Silver Medal at the National Championships in Lloydminster.
For Ferrah, she’s looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead of her at Lambton College, both on the court and in the classroom.
“I’m excited for what’s to come with the Lions,” said Blackbird. “I’m looking forward to playing for and learning from Coach Day, and I’m ready to do whatever I can to help the team build on last year’s successes heading into the new season.”
Academically, Blackbird will be enrolled in the Social Service Worker Program at Lambton College.
The Lions are coming off a historic season for the Women’s Basketball Program, and they’re looking to do one better this time around. With experience on the national stage under their belts, the group has their sights set on doing one better this season.
With several key contributors having graduated from last year’s roster, Day and her fellow coaches set out on the recruiting trail to address those gaps on the roster for the 2024-25 season. The addition of Blackbird adds more depth to the backcourt rotation and injects even more grit and toughness to the lineup on both ends of the court.
Welcome to The Den, Ferrah!
