SARNIA – Skipped across the border for a big-time addition.
Wing Ava Grant has officially committed to Head Coach Janine Day and the Lambton Women’s Basketball Program for the 2025-26 season, and beyond.
Grant is the second official commitment in the 2025 recruiting class for Day and the rest of the Lions coaching staff. She will join guard Alexis Hinds (Stratford, Ont.) as a newcomer in a Lambton uniform come September.
Malina Lopez and Keianna Cambridge have both verbally committed to the Lions for next season and will make their commitments official in the coming weeks.
“We are very excited to have Ava in a Lions uniform next season,” said Day. “She joins the Lions with post-secondary basketball knowledge and experience, and she adds length and athleticism to the wing spot.”
“Offensively, she is very shifty when attacking the rim. Defensively, she will add another element to our defensive pressure mentality. Ava brings an overall toughness that is something that we pride our team on.”
Grant, a five-foot-eight wing, comes to Lambton College by way of Marysville, Michigan. Most recently, she played parts of two seasons in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) at St. Clair County Community College with the Skippers.
Prior to playing at SC4, Grant played her high school basketball at Marysville High School for the Vikings. Grant ended her high school career as a back-to-back Division 2 district champion with the Vikings.
Now, as she gets set to embark on a new chapter in her basketball journey with the Lions, Grant is looking forward to seeing what’s to come for her in a Lambton uniform.
“I can’t wait to be here and get started,” said Grant. “It’s exciting and it’s a new opportunity for me.”
“I’m mainly looking forward to playing … I’m really just looking forward to basketball. It’s a new environment, new people, and a new place, so it’s all very exciting.”
Grant, who has dual citizenship with Canada and the United States, is no stranger to the Sarnia-Lambton area. Grant has several family members in the area, and she’s also looking forward to re-connecting with many of them throughout her time at Lambton College.
There is also a family connection on campus for the Lions. Grant’s cousin, Evander Doxilly, just wrapped up his second season with the Lambton Men’s Basketball Program this past year and is expected back for the 2025-26 campaign.
Academically, Grant will be enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program at Lambton College.
When asked about what style of play she’ll bring to the court come September for the Lions, Grant’s words echoed what Coach Day used to describe her as a player.
“I’m a very aggressive player,” added Grant with a laugh. “I love driving to the basket, making shifty moves, layups, and reverse layups.”
“I love rebounding and making good passes. That’s pretty much my kind of game.”
Welcome to The Den, Ava!
