SARNIA – Building for the future.
Point guard Alexis Hinds has officially committed to Head Coach Janine Day and the Lambton Women’s Basketball Program for the 2025-26 season, and beyond.
Hinds is the first commitment in the 2025 recruiting class for Coach Day and the rest of the Lions coaching staff.
“Alexis comes to the Lions with a wealth of basketball knowledge, and we are thrilled to have her in a Lions uniform next season,” said Day. “Her passion for the game is a quality we value in our program.”
“Alexis is a versatile guar who can both distribute the ball and score. She has played for a strong high school program in Stratford and led her team to multiple appearances at OFSAA.”
Hinds, a five-foot-seven point guard, comes to Lambton College by way of St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in her hometown of Stratford. Hinds played for the Warriors Girls Basketball Program under Head Coach Steve Goforth, and she played a key role in helping the team reach the Girls AA OFSAA Tournament back in November in North Bay.
The WOSSAA Champions were seeded third in the 18-team tournament. Wins over West Ferris S.S. and West Hill C.I. advanced the Warriors into the quarterfinals where they took on the top-seeds from King’s Christian Collegiate. Their OFSAA run would end in the quarterfinals, bringing their successful season to a close.
Now, without thinking too far ahead with the rest of high school still to finish, Hinds is excited for the next chapter of her journey that awaits her come September at Lambton College.
“It’s literally a dream come true,” said Hinds on her commitment to Lambton College and the Women’s Basketball Program. “This has been my dream school since I first learned about it, and it’s one of the best for firefighting which is what I want to get into.”
“Janine has been recruiting me since Grade 10, and she first saw me at the High School Tournament here in Sarnia, which is really awesome.”
Current Lions wing Morgan Goffar, who also hails from Stratford, was a connecting point for Hinds and the Women’s Basketball Program. Hinds and Goffar worked together outside of basketball, and on the court, she had to both guard Goffar and “learn how to guard her” in high school.
Hinds added that following in Morgan’s footsteps and coming to Lambton College is a cool feeling for her, given their personal connection.
Hinds made her commitment official inside the Cestar Group Athletics & Fitness Complex with more than a dozen family and friends in attendance to celebrate her success, both on the court and in the classroom. Afterwards, Hinds was quick to point out just how important her family and their support is to her.
“One thing about me is my family are my biggest supporters,” continued Hinds. “They come to every game they can, and my aunt literally worked on her way here just so she could come to my signing, so it meant a lot to have them here today.”
Come September, Hinds is looking forward to the new challenges that await her in Sarnia. There are some nerves, which are to be expected, but her level of excitement outweighs all other emotions.
“I’m really excited for the team,” added Hinds. “I’ve watched the team since Grade 10, and being able to watch them grow and develop as a team over the years has been awesome.”
Academically, Hinds will be enrolled in the Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training Program at Lambton College.
The Lions are coming off a historic 2023-24 season for the group, one that saw the team secure their first OCAA Championship and advanced to the CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championships for the first time in program history, where they brought home a Silver Medal.
This season, the Lions sit at 5-4 at the midway point of the season, good for a tie for fourth in the always-competitive OCAA West Division.
The addition of Hinds to the back court rotation gives the Lions another talented guard who can distribute the ball effectively and efficiently, while also scoring when she needs to. Self admittedly, Hinds likes to base her success on the court off her assist totals and not by points scored, which is something both Day and Goforth have seen over the years.
“My high school coach ended up sending me this message after OFSAA,” concluded Hinds. “It was a statement from Paige Bueckers that said, ‘I never judge my impact on a game by my scoring,’ and he said that I demonstrated that throughout our entire season.”
“We had a really good shooter on the floor, and I did my best to make sure that she was open.”
Welcome to The Den, Alexis!
