SARNIA – Starting the New Year off on the right foot.

The Lambton Women’s Basketball Program opened the second half of the season with a convincing win over the Fanshawe Falcons inside the Cestar Group Athletics & Fitness Complex on Wednesday night. The Lions outscored Fanshawe by a 29-4 margin in the third quarter, and they rode that momentum to a 74-42 win.

With the win, the Lions improve to 8-2 on the season while the Falcons fall to 3-7.

Out of the gates, the Lions opened on a 5-0 run and looked to take control early. The Falcons settled in on the defensive end and kept the Lambton offense at bay, holding the Lions to just 4-of-21 shooting from the field and 0-for-6 from three-point range. The Falcons struggled from the floor themselves, and the home side held a 13-9 lead after the first.

Fifth year forward Brett Fischer (Wallaceburg, Ont.) had five points and six rebounds in the first frame. She finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.

Despite taking a 10-point lead into halftime, the Lions weren’t satisfied with their performance on both ends of the floor. Whatever was said in the locker room resonated with the Lions, as they came out in the third frame on fire on both ends of the floor.

Legacie Blackbird (Wallaceburg, Ont.) hit back-to-back three pointers to spark the offense early, and the group rode that momentum on both ends of the floor throughout the frame. They held the Falcons to just 2-of-14 shooting from the field in the third quarter, all while shooting 52.4% from the field themselves.

The Lions led by 35 after three quarters, and they cruised in the fourth to the 74-42 win. With the win, the Lions completed the season sweep of the Falcons. They picked up a 65-55 win over the Falcons in London back on October 26th.

Seven different Lions recorded at least six points in the win. Emily Van Hooft (Sarnia, Ont.) had 12 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench, while Jennah Taylor (Sarnia, Ont.) added nine points and four rebounds in 16 minutes of action. As a group, the Lions forced 30 turnovers on the defensive end, and they converted those into 29 points on offense.

Lambton now turns their focus to their first road game of the 2024 calendar year. The Lions head to Brampton on Saturday, January 13th for an afternoon contest with the Sheridan Bruins. Tip off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., and you can catch the game on OCAA Live.
