Men’s Soccer Opens 2024 Recruiting Class with Commitment of London Goalkeeper Marshall Mathé

SARNIA – Opened the 2024 recruiting class in a big way.

Goalkeeper Marshall Mathé has officially committed to Head Coach Adam Lakey and the Lambton Men’s Soccer Program for the 2024 season, and beyond.

Mathé is the first commitment in the 2024 recruiting class for Lakey and the rest of his coaching staff.

“Overall, I’m just blown away at the school and what Lambton College has to offer and all of the opportunities that I’ll have with my program,” said Mathé. “On the sport side, I’m thankful to Adam for taking a chance on me and I’m very excited to join the Men’s Soccer Program.”

“I know what I’m capable of on the field and I know what the team is capable of, so I can’t wait to get started here.”

Mathé, a six-foot goalkeeper, comes to Lambton College by way of Central Secondary School in nearby London. He is the latest in a long line of student-athletes to join the Lions community from the Forest City, and he is the second goalkeeper in as many years across both the Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs to make the transition from London to Lambton College (Lauren Goldsack).

In addition to playing for the Golden Ghosts at the high school level, Mathé has also suited up for Whitecaps London. He also trains with London Elite Goalkeeping, which is how Lakey was first introduced to Marshall. At the recommendation of owner/operator Mark Haynes, Lakey attended a handful of Mathé’s training sessions, and his talent and work ethic, among other attributes, stood out to Lakey.

Fast forward a couple of seasons, and Mathé is the newest member of the Lions.

“I’m really excited to add Marshall to what we have here at Lambton College,” said Lakey. “In addition to returning starter Ben Crombeen, Marshall gives us outstanding depth and ability in goal.”

“It will be great to have Marshall come in and compete with Ben, and I think those two will really help push each other and will solidify the goalkeeper position for our team for next year and into the future.”

For Mathé, the opportunity to play alongside Crombeen is something he’s looking forward to. He is looking forward to the challenge of pushing each other each day to become the best players they can be to give the team the best chance to be successful.

Mathé is also looking forward to growing as a leader, both on and off the field, as his career progresses at Lambton College. One of his goals coming into Lambton College is developing into a leader within the Men’s Soccer Program, and being someone that his team can rely on.

Academically, Mathé will be enrolled in the Chemical Production & Power Engineering Technology Program at Lambton College.

As the pieces start to fall into place for the 2024 season, Lakey is excited about what Mathé brings to the program on the back end, and he feels that many of his attributes will help the team in other areas, as well.

“Marshall is a great athlete and a quality goalkeeper,” added Lakey. “He’s a very good shot stopper with great technique.”

“A part of his game that is underrated is his distribution. Often something that goes overlooked when we talk about goalkeepers, Marshall’s ability can often help his teams in transition.”

The Lions are coming off a rebuilding year in 2023. The Lions featured 18 first-year student-athletes on their roster this past year, and the transition to post-secondary soccer produced its share of growing pains. With many of those athletes expected back in 2024, there’s a heightened level of optimism surrounding the program moving ahead.

With the addition of Mathé kicking off the 2024 recruiting cycle for Lakey and company, the levels of excitement and anticipation ahead of the new season have only increased.

Welcome to The Den, Marshall!
