Lions Land Commitment from Listowel Pitcher, Infielder Austin McCourt Ahead of 2025 Season

Lions Land Commitment from Listowel Pitcher, Infielder Austin McCourt Ahead of 2025 Season

SARNIA – Another two-way threat is on his way to Lambton College in the fall.

Austin McCourt has officially committed to Head Coach Al Bezaire and the Lambton Men’s Baseball Program for the 2025 season, and beyond.

McCourt is the sixth member of a talented 2025 recruiting class for Bezaire and the rest of his coaching staff. McCourt joins a recruiting class that features Julian Concisom (Brampton, Ont.), Jeryn Shortt (Simcoe, Ont.), Aidan Littler (Simcoe, Ont.), Ben Adamson (London, Ont.), and Myles Adamson (London, Ont.).

“I’m excited,” said McCourt. “I’m excited for the atmosphere at Lambton, and I want to help the team win.”

“I know that Al is going to be a great coach to play for. I’ve been told the guys are a good group to be around, so I’m excited to meet more of the guys on the team and do what I can to help the team be successful.”

McCourt, a five-foot-eight pitcher / infielder, comes to Lambton College by way of Listowel District Secondary School. The Listowel native plays for both the Listowel Legionnaires and the WOBA Bulls outside of high school.

Back at the beginning of March, McCourt was part of a 32-person contingent from WOBA (Western Ontario Baseball Association) that traveled to Cuba for a week-long baseball and cultural exchange. McCourt was one of 12 players and coaches from Listowel that went on the trip.

Bezaire got his first look at McCourt and his abilities on the diamond at the Prep Baseball Showcase back in February, where his two-way play and professionalism were standouts for the Lambton coaching staff.

“We first got a look at Austin at a showcase last month, where his pitching and athleticism really caught our attention,” said Bezaire. “We’ve heard nothing but positive feedback on his character, abilities, and work ethic from coaches and current Lions who were familiar with his game.”

“We had a good chat about what we were looking for, in both ability and attitude. Austin struck me as a very passionate player who loves the game, loves to win, and as someone who wanted to continue to improve as a player and be a part of a culture and identity that we have worked hard to establish here.”

The right-hander gives the Lions roster even more versatility moving forward. With his abilities on the mound, McCourt will come in and compete for innings on the mound from day one. In the infield, his ability to play multiple spots gives Bezaire and company another asset that they can plug in at different spots based on the situation at-hand.

McCourt hopes to showcase his two-way abilities from the outset of his tenure as a student-athlete at Lambton College, but he’s also ready to do whatever he needs to do for the group to be successful.

“I just want to help the team win and do whatever I can to help us win,” added McCourt. “I would love to come dice off the mound, but I’m also a two-way player that can play in the field, as well.”

Academically, McCourt will be enrolled in the Border Services Program at Lambton College.

The Lions are coming off a 2024 season that saw the program win an OCAA Silver Medal on their home diamond at the 2024 OCAA Men’s Baseball Championships. Making their first post-season appearance in the program’s brief five-year history, the Lions shut out Durham in the semifinals to advance to the Gold Medal Game. A loss to St. Clair ended their season, but a Silver Medal gave them something to be proud of.

Moving ahead, the Lions are focused on proving that last year’s success wasn’t just a ‘flash in the pan’ and are out to prove that it was the start of sustained success in the OCAA. The addition of McCourt to the roster gives the Lions more versatility in the infield, and it adds another talented arm to the pitchers group for years to come.

Welcome to The Den, Austin!
