SARNIA – A pair of catchers caught themselves a big week at the plate.
Luke Murray (Men’s Baseball) and Elisabeth Bailey (Women’s Softball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for their efforts on the diamond, both at home and on the road.
This marks the first Athlete of the Week honour of the season for both Murray and Bailey.
Murray, a first-year catcher from Mitchell, had himself a breakout weekend at the plate for the Lions on the road against the Sault College Cougars. For the weekend, he went 6-for-7 (.857) at the plate with one double. Murray scored a total of four runs, two in each game, and he picked up three runs batted in.
Murray had three hits in each game against the Cougars, both wins for the Lions. In Game One, he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in a 12-1 victory. In Game Two, Murray was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, and he scored another pair of runs while driving in two more in a 17-0 win to help the Lions complete the doubleheader sweep of the Cougars.
For the year, Murray saw his average jump to .345 after his big weekend at the dish. He now has seven runs and seven RBIs on his resume. He has a .429 on-base percentage and a .414 slugging percentage through 11 games.
Bailey, a first-year catcher from London, also had herself a breakout weekend at the plate as the Lions played their first home games in three weeks. Despite the results not going in favour of the Lions, Bailey went a combined 6-for-12 (.500) at the plate this past weekend, racking up three extra-base hits and driving in seven runs for the Lions against Durham and Conestoga.
In Game Two on Saturday against the Lords, Bailey went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. She drove in all four runs for the Lions on the afternoon.
On Sunday against the Condors, Bailey was back at it again at the plate. Over the two games, she went a combined 4-for-8 at the plate. She hit her fourth double of the season in Game One while driving in a pair of runners, and she added her third triple of the year and another RBI in Game Two.
For the year, Bailey is now hitting .321 at the plate (17-for-53) with seven extra-base hits and nine runs batted in. She has an on-base percentage of .400 and a slugging percentage of .509 through 18 games.
