SARNIA – These two had stellar weekends on the diamond.
Wes Brooks (Men’s Baseball) and Avery Moninger (Women’s Softball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for their efforts on the road this past weekend across Southwestern Ontario.
This marks the first Athlete of the Week honour of the season for both Brooks and Moninger.
Brooks, a second-year first baseman / outfielder, continued his torrid start to the season at the plate over the weekend. In four games, Brooks hit .333 at the plate while posting a .600 on-base percentage against the Centennial Colts and Durham Lords. He scored a total of five runs and drove in six others.
Against Centennial on Saturday afternoon, Brooks connected on his first home run of the season in an 11-1 win for the Lions. He went opposite field in the second inning for a no-doubt, two-run home run. He went 1-for-1 in the game with a pair of walks and three RBIs.
In Game Two against the Colts, Brooks hit his second triple of the year and scored another pair of runs, while also picking up his fourth stolen base of the season.
On Sunday against Durham, Brooks picked up three more RBI and walked another three times.
For the season, Brooks ranks among the OCAA leaders in several statistical categories. He ranks first in doubles (5), second in triples (2), second in RBIs (15), second in hits (16), second in slugging percentage (.933), third in on-base percentage (.641), and fourth in batting average (.533), among several others.
Moninger, a second-year pitcher / infielder, was a workhorse for the Lions on the mound this past weekend in London and Oshawa. Moninger made an appearance on the mound in all four games for the Lions over the weekend, helping the team put together a 2-2 record across their four contests.
In the first game of the weekend, Moninger got the start against Fanshawe. She allowed just four runs over six innings, striking out seven, but the Lions weren’t able to muster up any offense in a 4-0 loss. Moninger came on in relief in Game Two on Saturday against Mohawk, throwing 2/3 of an inning in a 10-3 win for the Lions.
On Sunday, Moninger again got the start in the first game of the day for the Lions, this time against the St. Clair Saints. Moninger spun a gem against the Saints for her second win of the season, throwing a complete game shutout in the Lions’ 4-0 win. She struck out six while allowing just six hits.
Then, against Durham in the second game on Sunday, Moninger threw one inning in relief.
For the weekend, Moninger threw a total of 14.2 innings on the mound. She posted a 1-1 record, with one complete game shutout to her credit. She struck out 13 hitters over the weekend.
Congratulations to both Wes and Avery on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!
