AJ Edwards, Kylee Shortt Named Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week

SARNIA -- To paraphrase Brad Pitt in Moneyball: "They get on base a lot."

AJ Edwards (Men's Baseball) and Kylee Shortt (Women's Softball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for their efforts on the diamond during the week of September 30th - October 6th.

It marks the first Athlete of the Week accolade for both Edwards and Shortt this season.

Edwards, a first-year outfielder from Brampton, has given the Lambton lineup a boost in the nine-spot all season long. When you factor in his speed out in left field, Edwards has been a reliable presence for Coach Bezaire on both sides of the ball this year.

This past week against St. Clair, Edwards had himself another strong week at the plate against the top team in the province. Despite the Lions coming out on the wrong end of two hard-fought contests on Friday night, Edwards put together a two-game performance that saw him go 2-for-4 at the plate while putting together a .600 on-base percentage.

In Game One, he went 1-for-2 in an 8-2 loss. In Game two, Edwards again went 1-for-2 at the plate, this time also adding a walk. He drove in one run in the seventh inning as the Lions tried to mount the comeback, and he later came around to score a run of his own.

For the year, Edwards is hitting .400 (12-for-30) at the plate with 12 runs scored and six stolen bases. He also boasts a .471 on-base percentage.

Shortt, a second-year shortstop from Wyoming, did a little bit of everything for the Lions on the mound and at the plate this weekend against the Mohawk Mountaineers despite still recovering from a right-hand injury.

Across two games in Hamilton against the Mountaineers, Shortt went a combined 4-for-9 at the plate to help the Lions earn a split in their Sunday doubleheader to keep their playoff hopes alive. She picked up a pair of doubles on the weekend while driving in a total of six runs.

In Game One, Shortt went 3-for-5 at the plate while also drawing a walk as the Lions picked up a 17-5 win to start their day. Two of her hits in the game were doubles, giving her six extra-base hits for the season. Shortt drove in five runs in the game.

On top of her hitting prowess, Shortt also threw three innings of one-hit ball on the mound in relief to help the Lions come away with the win.

In Game Two, Shortt went 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and one RBI.

For the year, Shortt now has 12 RBIs to her credit and four doubles, while also accounting for 12 runs scored.

Congratulations to both AJ and Kylee on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!

The 2024-25 Athlete of the Week awards are presented by the Lambton College Student Administrative Council.
