Owen Norland, Maddy Bishop Take Home Athlete of the Week Honours

SARNIA -- One clinched a spot at Nationals while the other continued their provincial title defense with a win in their home opener.

Owen Norland (Men's Cross Country) and Maddy Bishop (Women's Basketball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week after strong performances on the course and the court this past week across Southwestern Ontario.

It marks the first Athlete of the Week honours for both Norland and Bishop this year.

Norland, a first-year runner from Sarnia, raced for just the second time this season this past weekend at the 2024 OCAA Cross Country Championships in King City. Still, he put together another top-15 performance against the top competitors in the OCAA. In his season debut back in September, Norland raced to a 9th-place finish at the St. Clair Cross Country Invitational in Windsor.

Then, this past weekend at the provincial championships, Norland raced to a 12th-place finish in a time of 29:02 (3:38/km pace). He finished one second behind the 11th-place finisher, and four seconds away from a top-10 finish. Still, he was named to the All-Ontario Second Team at the conclusion of the Championships.

With his 12th-place finish, Norland qualified for the upcoming CCAA Cross Country National Championships that will take place in Windsor on November 8th and 9th. The National Championship race will take place at Windsor's Malden Park, which was the site of the season-opening St. Clair Invitational.

Bishop, a fourth-year guard from Windsor, did a little bit of everything in the Lions' 2024-25 OCAA regular season home opener on Wednesday night against their rivals from Fanshawe College. She played all 40 minutes on the night, helping lead the Lions to a 57-51 win over the Falcons and improving the team's record to 2-0 to start the year.

Bishop finished the night with a balanced stat line, showcasing her impact on the game on both ends of the court. She finished the night with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. She shot 36.4% from the field, and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line.

She did most of her damage offensively in the middle portion of the contest, scoring five points apiece in the second and third frames.

For the year, Bishop is averaging 11.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assist per game while shooting 50.0% from three point range.

Congratulations to both Owen and Maddy on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!

The 2024-25 Athlete of the Week awards are presented by the Lambton College Student Administrative Council.
