SARNIA – Provided sparks off the bench.
Guard AJ Edwards (Men’s Basketball) and forward Sawyer Fischer (Women’s Basketball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of November 11th to 17th for their efforts on the road last week.
It marks the second Athlete of the Week selection for Edwards during the Fall semester, adding to the one he picked up back in October for his efforts on the baseball diamond. It’s Fischer’s first Athlete of the Week honour in a Lambton uniform.
Edwards, a first-year guard from Brampton, is one of four dual-sport athletes for the Lions this season. After helping the Lions bring home an OCAA Silver Medal with the Men’s Baseball program in mid-October, Edwards has now traded in his #1 baseball uniform for his #11 basketball jersey and is looking to replicate his baseball success on the hardwood.
This past week was a quiet week for the Lions, with a lone game on their schedule. While the end result wasn’t a favourable one for the group on the road at Fanshawe, Edwards gave the Lions an offensive spark off the bench.
In 11 minutes off the bench, Edwards scored a team-high tying 11 points while adding one assist. He finished the night shooting 4-for-8 (50%) from the field, and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Nine of his 11 points came in the second half as the Lions tried to spur a late-game comeback.
For the year, Edwards is averaging 4.5 points per game while shooting 53.8% from the field across four appearances.
Fischer, a fifth-year forward from Wallaceburg, has given the Lions a veteran presence in a front-court rotation that features its share of youthful potential. She’s also given the Lions a spark on both ends of the floor in recent weeks.
Against the Falcons, the Lions came out on the wrong side of the final score in their only game of the week. Fischer saw 11 minutes of action in a reserve role, but she made the most of her court time.
Fischer finished the night with seven points, five rebounds, and one steal. She went 3-for-4 (75.0%) from the floor, and a perfect 1-for-1 from the free throw line. Fischer scored five of her seven points, and grabbed three of her five rebounds, in the third quarter alone.
For the year, Fischer is averaging 5.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game over four appearances. She’s shooting 53.8% from the field and 60.0% from the free throw line.
Congratulations to both AJ and Sawyer on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!
