SARNIA – Road warriors.
Tutu Jangati (Men’s Basketball) and Maddy Bishop (Women’s Basketball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for their efforts on the road during the week of November 4 – 10, 2024.
It marks the first Athlete of the Week selection for Jangati this season, and the second for Bishop.
Jangati, a second-year guard from Windsor, has given the Lions a spark off the bench in his last two appearances. After putting up 15 points against St. Clair last week in 16 minutes off the bench, Jangati was at it again this week on the road against Conestoga.
In 21 minutes off the bench, Jangati scored a team-high 17 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals to help the Lions come away with a 76-69 win over the Condors. Jangati finished the night shooting 46.7% (7-for-15) from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
Jangati came out of the gates strong, scoring six of his 17-points in the first quarter on 3-of-5 shooting from the floor. He would add another six in the third quarter, helping the Lions outscore the Condors by a 27-12 margin in the frame to erase their halftime deficit and build momentum heading into the fourth quarter.
For the year, Jangati is averaging 9.5 points per game on 33.3% shooting from the field and 33.3% shooting from three-point range.
Bishop, a fourth-year guard from Windsor, is the Lambton Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time in three weeks to start the season after another standout performance on both ends of the floor. Bishop and the Lions used a second half comeback to force overtime against the Condors, and they rode that momentum in the extra frame to a 68-63 win.
Bishop set a new career-high for scoring in the win, pouring in a game-high 26 points to help pace the Lions offensively. She finished the night shooting 34.6% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. Bishop also chipped in six rebounds, three assists, and eight steals on the night.
The second half, and in overtime, were where Bishop did the bulk of her damage offensively. The Lions found themselves down by eight at the half, and then 11 after three quarters, but Bishop and company wouldn’t go down quietly.
After scoring six points in the third, Bishop added another eight in the fourth to go along with three rebounds and two steals as the Lions looked to mount a comeback. Bishop made back-to-back three pointers with under two minutes to play to keep the Lions within striking distance. Then, with 16 seconds left on the clock, Bishop recorded one of her eight steals and assisted on the game-tying three ball from Legacie Blackbird.
In overtime, Bishop hit a jumper with 32 seconds left on the clock to give the Lions a 64-61 lead, putting the Lions ahead for good. She later hit two free throws to put the game on ice, helping the Lions come away with the five-point win.
For the season, Bishop ranks fifth in the OCAA in scoring after her career night on Friday, averaging 16.3 points per game. She also ranks fourth in the conference in three-point shooting (40.5%).
Congratulations to both Tutu and Maddy on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!
