Two-Way Play Earns Evander Doxilly, Legacie Blackbird Lambton Student-Athlete of the Week Honours

SARNIA – A 12/10 week for both our number 12s on the hardwood.

Forward Evander Doxilly (Men’s Basketball) and guard Legacie Blackbird (Women’s Basketball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the week for the week of January 13th to 20th in recognition of their efforts on home court this past weekend.

It marks the first Athlete of the Week honour for both Doxilly and Blackbird during the 2024-25 season.

Doxilly, a second-year forward from Sarnia, appeared in just his second game of the season over the weekend against the Royals, but he provided a massive spark off the bench for the Lions on home court. Playing a career-high 19 minutes on the afternoon, Doxilly brought his best on both ends of the floor, helping the Lions to an 80-77 win over Redeemer in overtime.

On the afternoon, Doxilly went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, finishing with six points. He added in nine rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass, and two assists. On the defensive end, Doxilly racked up four steals and registered one blocked shot.

Doxilly checked into the game in the first quarter and made an immediate impact for the Lions. He recorded four of his six points in the first frame as the Lions built an early eight-point lead. Five of his career-best nine rebounds came in the first half alone.

In overtime, Doxilly played an integral part in disrupting the Redeemer offense. He provided yet another spark for the Lions when he made a layup while getting fouled, and the energy helped carry the Lions to their fifth win of the season.

Blackbird, a fourth-year guard from Walpole Island, gave the Lions a boost on both ends of the floor on Saturday afternoon against Redeemer. Playing a team-high 36 minutes, Blackbird’s two-way play was on full display as the Lions picked up a wire-to-wire win over Redeemer, 61-39, to move up to fourth in the OCAA West Division standings.

Against the Royals, Blackbird recorded seven points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a blocked shot while shooting 33.3% from the field. Her six rebounds and five assists were both season-high marks.

Five of her seven points came in the third quarter as the Lions built a 21-point lead through three quarters.

On top of her well-balanced stat line, it was her overall intensity on both ends of the floor that played a big role in the team win. Blackbird and company held the Royals to just 16.7% shooting from the floor and 10.0% from three-point range.

For the year, Blackbird is averaging 5.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.

Congratulations to both Evander and Legacie on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!

The 2024-25 Athlete of the Week awards are presented by the Lambton College Student Administrative Council.
