SARNIA – Opened 2025 at home with some individual accolades.
Guard Owen Newell (Men’s Basketball) and wing Morgan Goffar (Women’s Basketball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of January 6th to 12th in recognition of their efforts on home court to open the second half of the 2024-25 OCAA regular season.
It marks the first Athlete of the Week honour for both Newell and Goffar on the season.
Newell, a first-year guard from Brussels, has become a regular fixture in the starting five for the Lions. The six-foot-six guard has seen double-digit minutes in 10 straight games, and he’s starting to find his rhythm on both ends of the floor at the collegiate level.
This past weekend at home against Humber and Sheridan, Newell put together back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts while shooting better than 42% from the floor in both outings. He also pulled down a combined 16 rebounds over the weekend, including a career-best nine against the Hawks on Saturday.
Newell averaged 10.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game over the weekend while shooting 43.8% from the field (7-for-16) and 33.3% from three-point range (4-for-12). He opened the weekend with a 10-point, nine-rebound performance against the second-ranked team in the country. He followed that up with an 11-point, seven-rebound performance against the Bruins on Sunday.
For the year, Newell is now averaging 5.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. He’s shooting 36.4% from the field and 66.7% from the free throw line. Newell has three double-digit point performances to his credit so far this year.
Goffar, a third-year wing from Stratford, had an up-and-down season throughout the first part of the season. Goffar opened the year with back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts, but struggled to find her shooting touch as the 2024 calendar year came to a close.
This past weekend, Goffar found a bit of her rhythm once more, and her leadership was on full display as the Lions split their weekend against the Hawks and Bruins. Over the two games this past weekend, Goffar averaged 8.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.
After a quiet day on Saturday, Goffar did a bit of everything on Sunday as the Lions picked up a 14-point win over the Bruins, 71-57. She finished the day with a season-high 15 points, on 7-of-15 shooting, to go along with 10 rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one blocked shot.
Goffar is averaging 5.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game through 11 appearances this season.
