Crombeen, Goldsack, & Fischer Take Home Lambton Athlete of the Week Honours

SARNIA – It was a standout weekend for the Lions in the GTA.

Goalkeeper Ben Crombeen (Men’s Indoor Soccer) has been named the Lambton Male Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts at the George Brown Invitational on Friday. On the Women’s Side, the pair of goalkeeper Lauren Goldsack (Women’s Indoor Soccer) and forward Brett Fischer (Women’s Basketball) have been named Lambton Co-Female Student-Athletes of the Week for their individual efforts for their respective programs.

Crombeen, a first-year goalkeeper from Sarnia, had himself a strong start to the Indoor Soccer season for the Lions as they took part in the George Brown Invitational on Friday. While the Lions were unable to advance out of pool play, Crombeen gave the Lions a chance in every game. He picked up one shutout while allowing just three goals combined over the three games for a 1.00 goals against average.

The Lions suffered a 2-1 loss to the host Huskies to open the day before falling 1-0 to Lakehead Orillia. Crombeen and the Lions closed out pool play with a 0-0 draw against their rivals from St. Clair.

Crombeen was also the starting keeper for the Lions during the outdoor season in the Fall. He ended his first outdoor season ranked third in the OCAA, and first in the West Division, in total saves (93) while playing all 900 minutes during the regular season.

Goldsack, another first-year keeper for the Lions, continued her own individual success to begin her collegiate career at the George Brown Invitational. Goldsack recorded a pair of clean sheets and a 1.00 goals against average as the Women’s Indoor Soccer Program put together a record of 1-1-1 in pool play.

The London, Ontario product opened Friday’s invitational with a clean sheet against the host Huskies, as Maddie McAlpine and Erin Murray scored to give the Lions the 2-0 win. A 0-0 draw with Lakehead Orillia followed for Goldsack’s second consecutive clean sheet, before the Lions fell 3-0 to St. Clair in the final game of pool play.

Goldsack and the Lions finished third in their pool, missing out on a spot in the semifinals on goal differential.

Like Crombeen, Goldsack was near the top of the OCAA leaderboards as a rookie. Goldsack was second in the OCAA, and first in the West Division, with 146 total saves. She was one of three keepers in the league to play all 900 minutes in the regular season.

Fischer, a fifth-year forward from Wallaceburg, is a Lambton Student-Athlete of the Week for the third time this season after yet another double-double performance. Fischer recorded her eighth double-double of the season in the 74-62 win for the Lions on the road over Humber on Saturday afternoon. Fischer had 13 points and 18 rebounds in the win, while also recording four steals and a pair of assists to help the Lions push their record to 11-2.

In the third quarter was where Fischer did the bulk of her damage. She had seven of her 13 points and eight of her 18 rebounds in the third quarter, as she played all 10 minutes in the frame. All four of her steals also came in the third quarter, as the Lions stretched their lead to 11 through three quarters.

For the season, Fischer is averaging 13.5 points and an OCAA leading 11.5 rebounds per game. She is also first in the league with 73 offensive rebounds and 150 total rebounds.

Congratulations to Ben, Lauren, and Brett on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!
