Owen Newell, Simone Wilson Close the Regular Season with Athlete of the Week Honours

SARNIA – Entering the postseason on a positive.

Guards Owen Newell (Men’s Basketball) and Simone Wilson (Women’s Basketball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of February 3rd to 9th for their efforts at home in their respective regular season finales.

It marks the second Athlete of the Week accolade for Newell this season, while it’s the first for Wilson during the 2024-25 campaign.

Newell, a first-year guard from Brussels, continued his strong second semester as the Lions ended their regular season with a hard-fought win over the visiting Conestoga Condors. In the Lions’ 55-52 win, Newell recorded 15 points to go along with nine rebounds and one assist in 28 minutes of action.

After scoring six points and grabbing seven rebounds in the first half, Newell found his offensive rhythm in the third quarter as the Lions looked to weather the storm from the Condors. Newell recorded nine points in the frame, all from three-point range, to help the Lions take a one-point lead into the fourth.

Newell shot 75.0% (3-for-4) from three-point range in the third quarter alone, and 57.1% (4-for-7) overall on the night.

During the regular season, Newell averaged 7.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while appearing in all 18 games, 16 of which were starts. He recorded double-digit points in six of eight games in the second semester, including a career-best 21 points against Mohawk back on February 1st.

Wilson, a second-year guard from Cobourg, had one of her better all-round games in the Lions’ regular season finale on Friday night against the Condors. In 21 minutes off the bench, Wilson recorded a career-best 15 points on 54.5% shooting (6-for-11) from the field, to go along with five rebounds.

Wilson came out of the gates strong, scoring eight of her 15 points in the first half, four in each quarter. However, just like Newell did for the Men in their win, Wilson’s best quarter came in the third as the Lions extended their halftime lead. In five minutes of floor time in the frame, Wilson recorded seven points and pulled down two rebounds as the Lions took a nine-point lead and never looked back.

Across 16 games in the regular season, Wilson averaged 6.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, while shooting 37.1% from the field.

Congratulations to both AJ and Maddy on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!

The 2024-25 Athlete of the Week awards are presented by the Lambton College Student Administrative Council.
