Women’s Basketball Head Coach Janine Day Named to 2023 Mayor’s Honour List

SARNIA – Even though the calendar has flipped to 2024, the accolades continue to roll in for Women’s Basketball Head Coach Janine Day following what was an immensely successful 2023 calendar year for herself and the Women's Basketball Program.

Coach Day has been announced as an honouree on the Mayor’s Honour List for 2023, along with 14 other members or groups within the City of Sarnia and Lambton County.

The Mayor’s Honour List was established by the late Mayor Marceil Saddy in 1981 to honour citizens and group in the community or surrounding area who have been instrumental in improving the quality of life or making a significant contribution to the City of Sarnia and Lambton County.

The list is a tribute to the unsung people and groups in the community who make a difference in trying to create a good and just community and society.

“We are extremely happy for Janine to be recognized on the Mayor’s Honour List for 2023,” said James Grant, Manager of Athletics & Student Life. “The work she is doing with our Women’s Basketball Program, both on and off the court, is tremendous, as is her work in the community.”

“We are looking forward to a great remainder of the 2023-24 season for the Women’s Basketball Program as Janine and her staff are working hard to prepare the team for another run at a provincial medal.”

The 2022-23 season was Coach Day’s second year at the helm with the Women’s Basketball Program. The Lions put together a regular season record of 13-3 to finish second in the West Division. They carried their regular season success into the postseason, where they won an OCAA Silver Medal.

It was the program’s first OCAA medal at the top level in the league. Day was also named the 2022-23 OCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and subsequently was the league’s nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year.

Heading into the 2023-24 season, the Lions brought in a recruiting class that was filled with both talent and post-secondary experience. At the midway point, the Lions sit in a tie for second in the West Division with a 7-2 record.

In the 2023 calendar year, Day helped guide the Lions to a record of 16-5 in OCAA play, which includes both regular season and playoffs.

Lambton College President and CEO Rob Kardas took to ‘X’ to share his congratulations to Coach Day and the other recipients.

“Congratulations to Lambton College’s very own Coach Day and all the recipients recognized,” said Kardas. “The work you collectively do for our community is so very important. Thank you.”

Coach Day and the Lions return to OCAA play on Wednesday, January 10th when they play host to the Fanshawe Falcons. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. inside the Cestar Group Athletics & Fitness Complex.
