Coach Grant enters his 15th season with the varsity men's basketball program at Lambton College in 2022-23. He is the first coach in Lions men's basketball history to win an OCAA playoff game as well as the first coach to lead the Lions to a win at the OCAA Championships. 

The Lions climbed to their highest provincial and national position in school history in 2015-2016 with a #3 ranking in the OCAA and also a #6 ranking in the national CCAA poll. The Lions brought home their first OCAA D1 basketball medal with a 100-78 win over Sheridan in the 2016 OCAA Bronze Medal game. The team won another OCAA Bronze Medal in 2022. The team has advanced to the OCAA Championship Tournament in seven of the last eight seasons.

Under Grant, the Lions have recorded all four of their 20-win seasons. He won his 100th game as Lions head coach on November 10th, 2018.

Grant began his basketball coaching career in 2002 with the Irish Basketball Club. He went on to coach one year of high school basketball at Sarnia Collegiate in 2007 before being hired on as an assistant coach with Lambton College in 2008. He would become head coach of the Lions in 2011.

Five of his players have gone on to professional basketball careers - Mike Lucier, Shawn Hill, Branden Padgett, Jason Watts and Denes Hegedus.  Both Padgett (6th - 1,598 points) and Lucier (9th - 1,482 points) sit in the top-10 All-Time in OCAA career scoring. 

James was born in Sarnia, ON and graduated from St. Patrick's High School. He did his post-secondary schooling at Western University (UWO).

He is also the head coach of the Sarnia Braves Baseball Club. The squad captured the 2019 Ontario AAA Baseball title and represented Ontario at the Canadian Championships.
