St. Benedict Wing Cameron Diniz Commits to Lambton Men’s Basketball Program

SARNIA – The future continues to get brighter.

Cameron Diniz has officially announced his commitment to Head Coach James Grant and the Lambton Men’s Basketball Program for the 2023-24 season.

Diniz is the seventh member of the 2023 recruiting class for Grant and the Lions on the hardwood. Diniz joins a talented recruiting class that features the likes of Brandon Bogart (St. Thomas, Ont.), Albin Gashi (Cambridge, Ont.), Evander Doxilly (Sarnia, Ont.), Brian Avalo Barrera (London, Ont.), Sulaiman Murtaza (Cambridge, Ont.), and Denin Lual (Windsor, Ont.).

“I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to showcase my skills at a higher level than I have in the past,” said Diniz. “I like to put my body on the line, diving for loose balls and playing great defense while working to find my open teammates and getting them into a rhythm on offense.”

Diniz, a six-foot-four wing, is the latest recruit to join the Lions from Cambridge this season, pushing the number to three. Diniz comes to Lambton College from St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, where he played for the Saints Senior Boys Basketball program.

Having others from Cambridge coming to Lambton College has Diniz excited for what lies ahead this season.

“I’m happy that we’re able to continue to put Cambridge on the map with all of us coming to the OCAA,” added Diniz on committing to the Lions and playing with Gashi and Murtaza. “Being here with other Cambridge guys will definitely make it easier to get connected with the other guys on the team and allow us to really come together as a group.”

Coach Grant is also looking forward to having Diniz join the program in September, and he’s excited at the prospects of his team’s latest recruit.

“We first saw Cam play at a tournament in London this winter, and we were instantly impressed with how well he moves for his size,” said Grant. “He has the ability to play like a guard, but he also has the physicality to be a presence inside.”

“We are really looking forward to having Cam on the court with us this fall.”

Academically, Diniz will be enrolled in the Business – Accounting Program at Lambton College.

The Lions are coming off a 2022-23 season that saw the group be one of the last four teams standing in the OCAA for the second year in a row. Coach Grant and the Lions finished fourth at the 2023 OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Windsor, and they will be looking to climb back onto the podium in the coming year.

With the addition of Diniz to the mix, the Lions have added more size to their roster while adding versatility with his ability to play multiple positions.

Welcome to The Den, Cameron!
