Men’s Baseball Pitcher Ryan Carey Picks Up OCAA Star of the Week Accolade

SARNIA – No doubt about this one.

Men’s Baseball second-year pitcher Ryan Carey (Georgetown, Ont.) has been named an OCAA Star of the Week for the week of September 18 – 24, 2023.

Carey’s provincial recognition comes a day after he was named the Lambton Male Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday. It also marks the second consecutive week that the Lions have had an OCAA Star of the Week, as Dani Ramseyer (Women’s Softball) was selected the week prior.

In a pair of outings on the mound this past weekend, Carey came ready and kept the opposing offenses at bay. In total, he threw pitched nine innings, allowing just two runs, both of which were unearned, while striking out four batters.

On Saturday against the Sault College Cougars, Carey came on in the seventh inning in relief of starter Cole Brydges (Sarnia, Ont.). Carey allowed one unearned run in the no-decision.

Then, on Sunday, Carey made his first start of the season in Game Two against the Durham Lords. On the heels of a 16-7 loss in Game One, Carey spun a gem for the Lions to give them every chance to come away with the split in their doubleheader.

In a game that needed extra innings, Carey went the distance on the mound. He threw an eight-inning complete game, allowing just seven hits and one unearned run while striking out four batters. The Lions, who tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, would score the winning run on an error by the Durham third baseman in the bottom of the eighth and pick up a 2-1 win.

After his stellar weekend on the mound, Carey has a 0.00 earned run average, which puts him in a tie for first in the OCAA among qualified pitchers.

Congratulations, Ryan!
