PREVIEW: Lions Look to Close Weekend With Win at Durham

Sunday afternoon will feature a pair of teams who will be looking to bounce back after a rocky start to their 2019 season.

To close out the weekend’s action, the Lambton Lions will take on the Durham Lords at Kinsmen Stadium. Both the Lions and the Lords will be looking to close the weekend with a win after losing both games of their respective double-headers on Saturday.

The Lords opened the season against the high-powered St. Clair Saints. Durham fell behind early in their first game of the day, but a late comeback made things closer on the scoreboard. The Lords dropped Game One to the Saints, 10-5.

Game Two wasn’t as close, as St. Clair picked up a 15-1 win behind an outstanding pitching performance from Travis Snyder, who allowed just two hits over seven innings of work.

Sam Cawker recorded two hits over five plate appearances for the Lords against the Saints, one of which was a triple. Cawker leads the Lords with three runs batted in through two games, and he will look to continue his strong start to the season on Sunday against Lambton.

As for the Lions, they are coming off a two-game sweep of their own. Lambton kicked off their inaugural season with a double-header against the Seneca Sting. The Lions’ defense let them down in both games as the team combined for six errors over the two-game set.

In Game One, the Sting rolled to the 12-1 win in five innings, thanks in large part to a pair of home runs. The second contest was considerably closer, but the Lions still found themselves on the wrong side of the decision. Lambton dropped their second game of the day, 9-4.

Designated hitter Brady Hogg connected on the first-ever home run in Lambton baseball history in their second game on Saturday. Hogg hit a two-run home run in the third inning to etch his name into the Lions record books.

Third baseman Riley Brown drove in the team’s other earned run in Game Two on a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

Both the Lions and Lords will be looking to bounce back in a big way on Sunday afternoon. Lambton will be looking to find their rhythm on defense and to tighten things up across the field. On offense, Durham will be looking to find their own rhythm after being held to just two hits in their second game on Saturday against the Saints.

The season is still young, and the Lions still going through the process of figuring things out with a new system and a group of players that aren’t familiar with one another on the diamond. A win on Sunday would do wonders for the confidence of the Lions moving forward, and it would also mark a special place in the Lambton College history books.

The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
