Ryan Carey, Bri Dugal Named Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for September 18-24

SARNIA –  Have yourselves a week.

Second year pitcher Ryan Carey (Men’s Baseball) and first-year shortstop Bri Dugal (Women’s Softball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of September 18-24 for their efforts on the diamond.

Carey, a second-year pitcher from Georgetown, made his 2023 season debut for the Lions this past weekend. He threw a total of nine innings across two appearances, one each against the Sault Cougars on Saturday and the Durham Lords on Sunday.

Against the Lords on Sunday afternoon, Carey got the start in Game Two for the Lions. After falling 16-7 in Game One, the Lions were looking for a bounce back performance to salvage a split in the series and cap the weekend with a win.

Carey gave the group everything he had on the mound, and then some. The Lions came away with a 2-1 win in extra innings, and Carey was on the mound for its entirety. He threw an eight-inning complete game to pick up the win, his first of the season. He allowed seven hits and one unearned run while striking out four Durham hitters.

For the weekend, Carey threw a total of nine innings, allowing two unearned runs while picking up four strikeouts. He has a 0.00 earned run average for the season, which is tied for the league-best mark for qualified pitchers.

Dugal, a first-year shortstop from Ayr, has adjusted well to the collegiate level of softball through the first half of the season. Through her first 11 games, Dugal leads the team with a .324 batting average, and she’s racked up three multi-hit games.

This past weekend saw the Lions play six games over a three-day span, and while the results didn’t go in their favour, Dugal continued her strong play at the plate and in the infield. Appearing in five games over the weekend, Dugal went 6-for-15 (.400 average) at the plate, picking up a pair of multi-hit games in the process. She also recorded three RBIs, and scored one run herself.

Against the Durham Lords on Sunday morning, Dugal went 2-for-2 at the plate, picking up her second triple of the season and driving in a run. She also added a walk and scored a run.

On the basepaths, Dugal picked up a stolen base on Saturday against the Seneca Sting, her second of the year.

Congratulations to both Ryan and Bri on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!

This year’s Athlete of the Week awards are presented by the Lambton College Student Administrative Council.
