Jack Thorup, Women’s Basketball Team Take Home First Athlete of the Week Honours of 2024

SARNIA – Kicking off 2024 with a bang.

Wing Jack Thorup (Men’s Basketball) and the entire Women’s Basketball Team have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of January 8th to 14th for their efforts on the hardwood this past week in the first games of the 2024 calendar year.

Thorup, a second-year wing from St. Mary’s, gave the Lions significant contributions off the bench in their two games this past week. Against the Fanshawe Falcons and Sheridan Bruins, Thorup averaged 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting a combined 70.0% (7-for-10) from the field.

On Wednesday night against the Falcons at home, Thorup played 19 minutes off the bench in the 89-82 loss for the Lions. He recorded five points, on 50.0% shooting from the field, to go along with three rebounds and a block.

He closed his week on Saturday afternoon with a career-best performance. Against the Sheridan Bruins in Brampton, Thorup recorded a career-high 14 points in 22 minutes of action. Thorup was an efficient 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the field, and he pulled down four rebounds, two on each end of the floor for the visitors.

In 11 games this season, Thorup is now shooting 51.9% from the field and 88.9% from the free throw line.

Across their two wins this past week, it was truly a team effort for the Lambton Women’s Basketball Program. The group saw contributions come from everyone on their roster on both ends of the court, hence this week’s accolade going to the entire group.

On Wednesday night against Fanshawe, the Lions saw contributions come from everyone in their 74-42 win over the Falcons. After a close first half, the Lions flipped a switch in the third quarter, outscoring their opponents by a 29-4 margin to seize complete control and cruise to the 32-point win. All 12 players saw the floor in the win, with 10 of them recording at least two points.

Seven players had at least six points in the win.

Against the Sheridan Bruins on Saturday afternoon in Brampton, it was more of the same for the Lions. It was another team effort on both ends of the floor, as the Lions never trailed en route to an 84-39 victory over Sheridan.

Nine players recorded at least two points in the win, with seven scoring at least eight points and five in double-figures. Five players had at least five rebounds, and six players had at least three steals on the defensive end of the floor.

Across their two games, the Lions trailed for a total of one minute. They trailed 7-5 to the Falcons early in the first quarter on Wednesday. They were either tied or held a lead the rest of the way throughout the week.

Congratulations to both Jack and the entire Women’s Basketball Roster on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!

This year’s Athlete of the Week awards are presented by the Lambton College Student Administrative Council.
