Guards Jerry Wilson, Maddy Bishop Take Home Athlete of the Week Honours to Close the Regular Season

SARNIA – Shooters shoot.

Guards Jerry Wilson (Men’s Basketball) and Maddy Bishop (Women’s Basketball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of February 5 – 11, 2024 for their efforts on the road in a weekend sweep for the Lions to close the regular season.

It marks the second Student-Athlete of the Week honour for both Wilson and Bishop. Wilson picked up his first after the final game of the 2023 portion of the schedule, while Bishop was named the Female Athlete of the Week after the opening weekend of the regular season.

Wilson, a fourth-year guard from Detroit, had himself a stellar weekend on the road, helping lead the Lions past the Redeemer Royals and Conestoga Condors. Over the two games, Wilson averaged 24.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 60.9% from the field and 58.8% from three-point range.

Coming into the game against the Royals, Wilson needed just five made three-pointers to reach 100 made threes for his Lambton career in the regular season. He would hit that mark in the third quarter, and he would go onto record a career-high 29 points in the 101-88 overtime win for the Lions.

On Saturday, Wilson would follow up his career-night with another strong performance. He had 19 points, on 60.0% shooting, and four rebounds in Lambton’s 99-91 win over the Condors.

In the regular season, Wilson averaged 14.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 40.7% from the field and 39.3% from three-point range.

Bishop, a third-year guard from Windsor, is hitting her stride offensively at just the right time for the Lions. In wins over the Royals and Condors this past weekend, Bishop averaged 16.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game while shooting 53.3% from three-point range.

On Friday night against Redeemer, Bishop came out strong from the opening tip. She scored eight of her 18 points in the first quarter alone, going 3-for-5 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc to help the Lions build an early 12-point lead. She would finish with 18 points and four steals in 33 minutes as the Lions picked up a 66-51 win and secured first place in the West Division.

Against the Condors on Saturday, Bishop put together an efficient afternoon in limited minutes. Bishop recorded 14 points, on 5-of-11 shooting, to go along with three rebounds and three steals in 24 minutes of action, helping the Lions to the 91-39 win. The Lions led 25-11 after the first, meaning the contingent of starters were given ample time to rest down the stretch, but Bishop still made the most of her minutes.

For the regular season, Bishop averaged 11.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game while shooting 31.3% from the field.

Congratulations to Jerry and Maddy on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!
