Wilson, Van Hooft Take Home Final Athlete of the Week Honours of the 2023 Calendar Year

SARNIA – Building momentum heading into the second half of the season.

Guards Jerry Wilson (Men’s Basketball) and Emily Van Hooft (Women’s Basketball) have been named the Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of November 27th to December 3rd for their efforts on the hardwood this past week on the road.

On Wednesday night against the Mohawk Mountaineers in Hamilton, Wilson had his best offensive output of the season, albeit in a 107-101 loss. The fourth-year guard from Detroit, Michigan had a season-high 25 points to go along with two rebounds in Hamilton.

Wilson did the bulk of his damage in the second and fourth quarters. He closed the first half by posting seven points, on 3-of-7 shooting from the floor, and he recorded his two rebounds to help the Lions cut into their first quarter deficit. Then, in the fourth frame as the Lions looked to claw their way back into the game yet again, Wilson went 4-of-5 from the field for 11 points.

For the season, Wilson has been quietly consistent on offense for the Lions. He has eight games with at least 11 points through the first half of the season. Wilson is averaging 14.6 points per game this season while shooting 38.0% from the field, 40.6% from three-point range, and 89.7% from the free throw line.

Wednesday night marked the first start of the 2023-24 season for Van Hooft, and she put together a strong offensive performance for the Lions despite the group coming out on the wrong side of a 58-54 decision at Mohawk. The third-year guard from Sarnia recorded a team-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and a steal against the Mountaineers.

Similar to Wilson’s performance in the Men’s game, Van Hooft did most of her damage in the fourth quarter as the Lions looked to fight their way back from a double-digit deficit. Van Hooft was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field in the fourth frame, including 2-for-2 from three-point range, recording nine points to get the Lions within striking distance.

Wednesday’s 14-point outing was Van Hooft’s fourth game with double-digit points this season, and second in the last three outings (12 points vs. Humber on November 18th). For the season, she is averaging 9.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game off the bench while shooting 41.9% from the field and 39.1% from three-point range.

Congratulations to both Jerry and Emily on being named this week’s Lambton Student-Athletes of the Week!
