Women's Basketball Lands Commitment From Spears, Pretty for 2019-20 Season

The Lambton Lions women's basketball team have added a pair of recruits ahead of the 2019-20 season.

With key losses from last year's team leaving holes in the back court rotation, Head Coach Kendel Ross has added a pair of guards over the weekend to help solidify her rotation. The Lions are thrilled to announce that Breanna Pretty and Taya Spears have committed to the Lions women's basketball program for the 2019-20 season.

Pretty comes to the Lions from St. Patrick's High School in Sarnia. As a member of the Fighting Irish, Pretty was a part of the team that won the Lambton-Kent Senior Girl's Basketball Championships in 2017. Pretty is excited about the next chapter of her basketball career, and Lions fans will like what they see from her on the court.

"I am someone who will work my butt off," said Pretty. "The biggest difference [between high school and the OCAA] is the work that goes in, but I'm excited to play at the next level."

Spears joins the Lions after playing her high school basketball with the A.B. Lucas Vikings in London, Ontario. Last season, the Vikings took home the Antique Bronze Medal at OFSAA on their home court after a fourth-place finish. Looking ahead to the next chapter of her basketball career, Spears is excited for what lies on the horizon.

"I’m looking forward to the new people, the new environment, and the chemistry that we’ll have this season," said Spears. " These ladies are extremely cool and they’re really talented, so I’m excited for that."

When asked about her latest recruits, Ross raved about the addition of both Pretty and Spears.

"They're both extremely talented players," said Ross. "Breanna is so quick on offense, while Taya will step in and take a charge without any hesitation with her toughness."

"We're lucky to have both of them join our team this season, and hopefully beyond."

The Lions are coming off a 2018-19 season in which they finished the regular season in a tie for fourth-place in the West Division with a record of 12-8. With six players having graduated from the program last season, the addition of both Pretty and Spears give the team a boost in the back court.

Pretty and Spears join Emily Fleischmann and Cassidy Crowe in the Lions' 2019-20 recruiting class.

The 2019-20 season gets underway for the Lions on Friday, October 18th when they host the Niagara College Knights inside the Lambton College Athletics & Fitness Complex. The opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
