Lions Spoil Home Opener for Royals with 2-1 Win

Redeemer drops season opener on a rainy day in Ancaster

The Lady Royals Women's Soccer team opened up their 2015-2016 season at home on Saturday falling to the Lambton Lions. Redeemer took a lead late in the first half but 2 unanswered goals from Lambton kept the Royals from their first win with a 2-1 loss.

Redeemer got on the board first with a goal from Lindsay Moffatt in the 41st minute after outshooting Lambton early on. The momentum did not last for the Royals however as Lambton marched down the field, scoring less than a minute later, with a goal from Victoria Regan to tie the game at 1-1.

Lambton found their second of the game shortly after half when Maria Vani scored her first of the season in the 56th minute.

A couple late surges by the Royals gave them a chance to equalize but Lambton held strong and held on for the 2-1 win.

A cool and rainy day didn't keep the Royals fans from coming out to get a look at the new women's soccer squad taking the field for the 15-16 season. Featuring 8 individuals playing in their first outdoor soccer game for Redeemer, Head Coach Caell Huyer took many positives from the game. "Our system worked well", commented Huyer. "We were dealt a couple unlucky goals against, one less than a minute after we took the lead. We struggled to capitalize in the midfield and didn't finish our chances up front but overall there are lots of positives to work with moving forward."

Redeemer will head back to the practice field in preparation for their next league game on September 17th against the Fanshawe Falcons.
