RECAP: Roller Coaster Season Continues With Road Loss at Fanshawe

Just four days removed from their thrilling win over the Sheridan Bruins, who were the top-ranked team at the time, the Lambton Lions men’s basketball team was on the road looking to keep their momentum going.

However, their lingering fourth-quarter woes re-emerged, and the Lions were unable to come away with a win.

On Wednesday night, the Lions dropped a 96-90 decision to the Fanshawe Falcons in London, Ontario. The loss dropped Lambton to 4-4 on the season, while the Falcons improved to 5-2 after picking up their fourth straight win.

The Lions started the first quarter strong, racing out to a 12-7 lead before the midway point of the quarter, thanks to five points apiece from Tyvell Peters (Jane & Finch, Ont.; 3rd Year) and Jason Watts (Detroit, Mich.; 5th). Fanshawe hit their stride over the final five-plus minutes, closing the half on a 16-4 run to take a seven-point lead into the second frame.

Fanshawe continued their momentum into the second quarter, opening on a 12-5 run to stretch their lead to 14 points, at 35-21, prompting a timeout from Coach Grant to try and get things back on track.

Shortly thereafter, the Lions started to make a move. A pair of free throws from Deiondre Reid (Scarborough, Ont.; 2nd) kicked off a 7-0 run for Lambton, bringing them back within single digits of the Falcons. While Fanshawe would take a 48-43 lead into the half, the Lions had some momentum they could build upon.

In the third quarter, both teams traded baskets as the Falcons looked to gain some separation while the Lions looked to take a lead of their own. Defensively, the Lions stepped up their game, forcing Fanshawe to turn the ball over on several possessions and turning them into points on the offensive end of the floor.

A pair of free throws from Tyrelle Miller (Brampton, Ont.; 1st) with 1:24 to play in the third gave the Lions its first lead since midway through the first quarter. Buckets from Reid and Watts in the final minute put the Lions ahead by four heading into the fourth.

Much like the third quarter, the fourth started out with both teams trading baskets. A layup from Peters and a three pointer from Kardon Edwards (Brampton, Ont.; 2nd) on consecutive possessions gave Lambton a 77-70 lead.

Fanshawe bent, but didn’t break, and they fed off the energy from their home crowd down the stretch. They kept chipping away, and ultimately overtook the Lions on a three pointer from Marko Maletic with 3:21 to play.

Lambton shot themselves in the foot in the closing minutes, as untimely fouls put the Falcons at the line. A pair of technical fouls assessed to Reid took him out of the game, giving the Falcons an opportunity to pad their lead. When the dust settled, the Falcons used a fourth quarter comeback to notch a 96-90 win over Lambton.

The Lions had five players reach double-figures in the loss. Tyvell Peters led all Lambton scorers with 17 points, on 7-of-13 shooting, to go along with seven assists. Jason Watts recorded his fourth double-double of the season, finishing the night with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocks.

After a 3-1 start to the season, the Lions have now dropped three of their last four outings and are now 1-1 on their current four-game road swing.

Lambton will return to the court on Saturday, November 16th when they take the trek to North Bay, Ontario for a contest with the Canadore Panthers. Opening tip on Saturday is set for 6 p.m.
