RECAP: Lions Lead Wire-to-Wire in Exhibition Win Over Skippers

On Wednesday night inside the Lambton College Athletics & Fitness Complex, the Lambton Lions women’s basketball kept their perfect preseason record intact with an 81-61 win over the visiting St. Clair County Community College (SC4) Skippers.

The Lions now boast a record of 7-0 in the preseason with one game left ahead of the 2019-20 regular season.

Lambton led wire-to-wire on the night, and their 30-point first quarter set the tone for the evening. They held a 30-16 lead after the opening 10 minutes, setting them up for a comfortable finish down the stretch.

Guard Cassidy Crowe led all scorers with 29 points in the win, while first-year guard Taya Spears went for 20 points and five rebounds.

“Preseason is a time to do work,” said Crowe. “You always want to congratulate yourself when you have a big win, but there’s still room for improvement and things we can still tidy up before next week.”

“The win is what we needed to remind ourselves that we are a good team and we have just scratched the surface.”

Crowe helped the Lions open the second quarter on a 15-0 run to put the Skippers in an even deeper hole, one that they wouldn’t be able to crawl out of. The energy and momentum that Lambton was able to create helped carry them to their seventh preseason win of the year.

Head Coach Kendel Ross was pleased with the performance, but she knows that there’s more work ahead.

“We’ve got a few players leading the way for us, and everyone else follows suit and that’s all it takes,” said Ross. “We made a couple of adjustments on the bench and the girls took them and ran with them, literally.”

“We made some great adjustments and brought some energy, and that’s the team I’d like to see every quarter.”

The Skippers were led by Lily Lyons and Ha Laya Cato, both of whom recorded 10 points apiece in the loss.

Lambton will close their preseason on Friday night when they head across the border a road game against the Rochester University Warriors. Opening tip is set for 6:30 p.m.

The Lions open league play on Friday, October 18th when they host the Niagara College Knights inside the Athletics & Fitness Complex. Tipoff is also set for 6 p.m.
