RECAP: Lions Open 2020 with 72-53 Win Over Redeemer

The Lambton Lions women’s basketball team took some time to get going on Friday night, but once they found their rhythm, they were hard to stop.

Lambton opened the 2020 portion of their season with a 72-53 win over the Redeemer Royals inside the Lambton College Athletics & Fitness Complex.

With the win, the Lions improve to 7-4 on the season and complete the regular season sweep of the Royals in the process. The loss drops Redeemer to 0-9 on the season.

Early on, it look the Lions some time to find their footing. Lambton’s slow start allowed the Royals to take an early eight-point lead with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter.

Redeemer led by seven points at the end of the first frame, 21-14. From there, it was all Lambton. Breanna Pretty (1st Year, Sarnia, Ont.) had 18 of her game high 30 points in the first half, and the Lions used her strong play as a catalyst to give them the lead heading into the second half.

The Lions outscored the Royals by a 20-10 margin in the second quarter to take a 34-31 lead into the break.

In the second half, Lambton continued to ride their wave of momentum from the second quarter. The Lions opened the third quarter on a 15-0 run, stretching their lead to 18 points at the time. The Lions’ lead would grow to as many as 25 points before the quarter was out.

From there, the fourth quarter was a formality. Redeemer made a run to start the frame, but never seriously threatened the lead of the Lions. Lambton’s lead quickly grew back to 20 points, and the rest was, as they say, is history.

Lambton cruised in the second half, picking up the 72-53 win in the process.

Pretty led all scorers on the night, setting a new career-high in the process with 30 points. She added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Morgan Wagg (4th Year, Sarnia) finished the night with 14 points, on 6-of-17 shooting, to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.

Jess Angelini led the Royals with 20 points, shooting 4-of-11 from three-point range in the process.

The Lions have a handful of days off before they head out on the road for their next two contests. Lambton returns to the court on Wednesday, January 15th when they take on the Mohawk Mountaineers.

Opening tip against the Mountaineers is set for 6 p.m.
