RECAP: Lions Go Perfect at 2019 Can-Am Collegiate Classic

For the first time since the 2019 Blue & White Game, the Lambton Lions women’s basketball team took to the court inside the Lambton College Athletics & Fitness Complex in game action over the weekend.

The Lions played host to the 2019 Can-Am Collegiate Classic on the weekend of October 5-6, 2019. The event featured two teams from the state of Michigan and two teams from the OCAA – East Division. Lambton was in action twice on Saturday, and they held down their home court to the tune of two wins.

Lambton now boasts a 4-0 record in exhibition play after picking up two wins last weekend at a preseason event hosted by the Loyalist Lancers.

This past weekend, the Lions took on both the Seneca Sting and the Centennial Colts on Saturday. Lambton opened up the Can-Am Collegiate Classic with a 57-53 win over the Sting, and they closed out Saturday’s action with a convincing 73-52 win over Centennial to keep their record in exhibition play blemish-free through four games.

Against the Sting, it was a tale of two halves. Lambton held a 35-19 lead after the opening 20 minutes and looked to be in full control of the game. Seneca had other ideas, and a strong defensive effort in the second half made things interesting down the stretch.

In the fourth quarter, the Sting erased their 16-point deficit at halftime and made the Lions work for the victory. A layup from first-year guard Breanna Pretty late in the fourth quarter helped to seal the deal for the Lions, giving the hosts a four-point win.

Morgan Wagg led all scorers with 17 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Pretty finished the game with 15 points of her own.

In the final game on Saturday, the Lions looked for a more consistent performance against Centennial after their second-half struggles against the Sting. As the game wore on, Lambton continued to build their lead and they avoided another second-half struggle. The Lions closed out their 2019 Can-Am Collegiate Classic with a 73-52 win over the Colts.

After the first quarter, the Lions held a 23-18 lead over the Colts. It was their performance on both ends of the floor in the second quarter that helped put some space in between themselves and Centennial. Lambton held the Colts to just eight points in the quarter while scoring 15 points themselves, pushing their lead to double-digits at halftime, 38-26.

The second half saw Lambton build on their lead throughout, cruising to the 21-point victory and a perfect 2-0 record at the event.

First year guard Taya Spears led all scorers with 18 points in the win, while Wagg continued her strong play in the preseason with a 16-point outing.

Lambton will now host St. Clair County Community College inside the Lambton College Athletics & Fitness Complex on Wednesday, October 9th. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., and admission is free for those who wish to attend.

The game will be live streamed for those who can’t make it in-person.
