RECAP: Men’s Soccer Shut Out in Weekend Trip to Toronto

This past weekend saw the Lambton Lions Men’s Soccer team head out on the road for the first time in 2019. Looking for their first win of the year, the Lions came home empty-handed after a pair of shutout losses.

Lambton sits at 0-3-0 on the year after the weekend sweep in Toronto.

In their opener against Conestoga, the Lions allowed a goal in the opening minutes to give the Condors the early momentum. Lambton was hoping to reverse their fortunes against the Sheridan Bruins on Saturday with the hopes of notching their first win of the season.

History would repeat itself once again, as the Lions were on the wrong end of a goal in the opening minute. Sheridan would add a second goal in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the break. The Lions were held without a shot on target over the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, a pair of goals for the Bruins within two minutes of each other pushed their lead to four goals. Sheridan cruised down the stretch to the 4-0 win.

Pietro Restivo (1st Year, Sarnia) made his first start of the season in net, making seven saves in the loss.

On Sunday, the Lions returned to the field to take on the University of Toronto-Mississauga (UTM) Eagles to close out their weekend road trip. With a different look in the starting XI, the Lions were looking for a spark on offense.

The Eagles delivered the first blow of the game, finding the back of the net in the 16th minute to break a scoreless tie. The home side would add a second goal just before halftime to take a 2-0 lead. In an almost-identical scenario as their first two games, the Lions were looking to find momentum in the second half in an attempt to notch their first win of the year.

Instead, the Eagles continued to build on their lead as the game wore on. UTM took any momentum away from the Lions with a goal in the 59th minute, and they would add two more goals in the final 10 minutes to notch a 5-0 win.

After dropping both on the road, the Lions will return home for a pair of home contests next weekend. The Niagara College Knights come to town on Saturday, September 21st, while the top-ranked Humber Hawks will bring their talents to Sarnia on September 22nd.
