Saturday afternoon marks the end of a three-game home stand for the Lambton Lions on the soccer field, and they will be looking to cap it off with their first win of the season.

The Lions will welcome the Mohawk Mountaineers to the Lambton College Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. Both the Lions and Mountaineers currently find themselves outside of the playoff picture, and both teams will be looking to put forth as strong effort to better their playoff chances down the stretch.

Lambton enters the game with an 0-5-0 record for the year. They have recorded just three goals on offense, two of which came in their regular season opener against the Conestoga Condors.

The Lions are coming off back-to-back losses to open their three-game home stand last weekend. A 5-1 loss to the Niagara College Knights on Saturday kicked off the weekend, while a 10-0 defeat at the hands of the top-ranked Humber Hawks handed the Lions their fifth straight defeat.

Mitch McAuley found the back of the net for the Lions in the first half against the Knights on a header that was just out of the keeper’s reach. The Lions and Knights were tied 1-1 heading into the second half, but four Niagara goals over the final 45 minutes propelled the visiting side to their first win of the season.

On Saturday, the Lions will look to exploit a tired Mountaineers team. Mohawk, who will be playing two games in as many days this weekend, is coming off a 5-0 loss at the hands of the St. Clair Saints on Friday night.

After a 3-1 win over Niagara in their second game of the year, the Mountaineers have been held to just one goal over their last three games, all of which have been losses.

The Lions will be playing with heavy hearts and some extra motivation this weekend, as the soccer community in Sarnia-Lambton is mourning the unexpected loss of one of their long-time members. Gary Scheiers, a retired teacher and principal from the Lambton Kent District School Board, unexpectedly passed away earlier this week.

Lambton will dedicate the game on Saturday against Mohawk to the family, friends, and loved ones of Scheiers, and they will look to break into the win column in his honour.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, and the game will immediately follow the completion of the Women’s Game.
