On Wednesday night, the Lambton Lions women’s basketball team dropped their third consecutive game with an 82-42 defeat at the hands of the ninth-ranked Fanshawe Falcons in London, Ontario.
The loss dropped the Lions to 5-3 on the season, while the Falcons improved their record to 5-1 with the win.
Lambton started out the game slow, allowing the Falcons to race out to an early lead. Lions Head Coach Kendel Ross called a timeout early on to try and help the team regain some focus, and whatever was said in the huddle seemed to work.
Equipped with a focused approach, specifically on the defensive end, the Lions managed to claw their way back and end the frame down just three, at 15-12.
The second quarter was more of the same. A defensive battle on both sides, points were hard to come by at times. Both teams struggled to find their rhythm on offense, and neither team was able to pull away. Lambton kept the Falcons within striking distance throughout the second quarter, and they entered the half down just six, 33-27.
In the third quarter was where things took a turn for the worse. The Falcons ramped up the pressure on both sides of the ball. Fanshawe couldn’t miss from the field, and the Lions couldn’t find their shooting stroke in the quarter. Add up both, and the result was a 24-5 advantage on the scoreboard for the home side.
Lambton shot just 2-of-20 from the field as a team in the third quarter, while the Falcons went 9-of-17 from the field, collectively.
Fanshawe carried their third quarter momentum into the fourth quarter, and the Lions weren’t able to threaten the lead down the stretch. The Lions dropped an 82-42 decision to the Falcons for their third consecutive loss.
Guard Morgan Wagg led all Lambton scorers with 10 points in 25 minutes off the bench. She was the only Lambton player to reach double-figures on the night. Ashleigh Pettit added nine points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, while dishing out a team-high five assists.
The Lions now have 10 days before their next game to work out some of the kinks. The road doesn’t get any easier, however, as Lambton will conclude their three-game road trip against the 5th-ranked Humber Hawks.
Lambton will make the trip to Humber on Saturday, November 23rd for a weekend matinee. Opening tip against the Hawks is set for 2 p.m.
